Why the Last Upgrade on Your List
Should be the First Item on Your Contract
Cocoon Insulation
The new home upgrade that can actually pay you back, month after month.
A high-quality home depends on fine workmanship and superior building
materials. By installing Cocoon'' cellulose insulation – a valuable
upgrade – into the attics and walls of new or renovated homes, we offer
home buyers the best from the start. While insulation may not be the
most exciting upgrade to consider, it is one of the most important.
After all, you’ll depend on it year-round to keep you and your family
warm in the winter and cool in the summer. When we install Cocoon, which
is made from 100 percent recycled paper, we add a continuous blanket of
protection to a home.
What can you expect from this distinct upgrade?
Energy Savings and Comfort
Cocoon insulation prevents energy from escaping through its superior
insulating power and sealing ability. First, Cocoon insulation has a
higher R-value (insulation power) per inch than blown fiberglass and
other common types of insulation. So it offers a higher level of
protection, which is particularly important when insulating small areas.
Also, as Cocoon is blown into the attic and sprayed into walls, it fills
tiny cavities and surrounds obstructions such as pipes and wires. It
seals gaps where energy can escape, reducing air infiltration and
resulting drafts. Because Cocoon covers gaps and voids and because it is
two to three times denser than similar fiberglass products, Cocoon is
also an excellent sound control material. Cocoon helps suppress outside
noises such as traffic and airplanes as well as inside noises such as
TVs and conversation. The many advantages of Cocoon are apparent every
day – in lower energy bills and a more comfortable home environment.
Cocoon Insulation Features & Benefits
Higher R-Value
Higher R-value per inch than other types of insulation. This means more
insulating with less material and less money.
Fills tiny cavities and surrounds plumbing pipes and electrical wiring,
sealing gaps where energy can escape, reducing air infiltration.
By providing a tighter seal, Cocoon achieves 26% greater overall energy
efficiency.
Better Sound Control
The same density in Cocoon that protects you in a fire absorbs the noise
you don’t want to hear. Cocoon’s ability to fill gaps and voids creates
a quieter home by reducing noise between walls and between floors.
Approved as an enhanced sound control material for homes located in
airport flight paths.
Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 0.90 according to ASTM C-423-84a.
Suppresses sound transmission much better than traditional wall
insulation materials. The density of Cocoon is two to three times
greater than similar fiberglass products, completely filling any cavity
into which it is properly installed.
Eliminates voids and gaps that are convenient avenues for sound to
travel.
Environmentally More Friendly
Consists of 85% recycled paper fiber, at least 80% recovered,
post-consumer content.
Not manufactured with any formaldehyde, asbestos, mineral fiber or
fiberglass.
Newsprint is one of the largest single components of the residential
waste stream. Insulating a typical 1,500-sq. ft. ranch-style home with
cellulose insulation productively recycles as much newsprint as an
individual will consume in 40 years. This is based on data from the
National Solid Waste Management Association.
If America’s homes were insulated with cellulose, over 3.2 million tons
of waste newsprint would be removed from the refuse stream every year
and put to productive energy use conserving vital energy resources. This
projection is based on 1.5 million new homes with an average area of
1,500 sq. ft, insulated to R-30 in the attics and R-13 in the sidewalls.
If more stringent standards, such as those of the Model Energy Code were
followed, even more recyclable material would be removed from the waste
stream.
Cellulose is produced in electrically driven mills, that require less
energy to produce. Other types of insulation are produced in furnaces
that use natural gas and release greenhouse gases.
Improved Fire Safety
Class 1 fire rating as determined by ASTM E84.
Treated with fire retardants that exceed test requirements set by the
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standard 16 CFR parts 1209 and
1404.
Cocoon is non-flammable when tested for smoldering combustion.
The borates added to Cocoon to provide flame resistance are six times
less toxic to humans than common table salt.
Cocoon meets all test requirements of ASTM-C739 (US), CAN/ULC-S703 in
Canada, federal specification HHI-515E and all FHA, VA, HUD and building
code requirements.
Meets Underwriters Laboratories (UL) testing and is Classified for the

«
Flame Spread Permanency
«
Fungi Resistance
«
Smolder Resistance
Resists fire longer than other types of insulation.
In a test conducted
at the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute, the structure with Cocoon
cellulose insulation stood more than 55% longer than the other insulated
structure with fiberglass.
Increases fire resistance of walls. Independent laboratory tests have
shown cellulose insulation can increase the fire resistance of walls up
to 77 percent compared to un-insulated walls.
Can be used in a one-hour fire wall assembly that meets International
Building Code and International Residential Code. The tests were
conducted according to the ASTM E119 protocol by Omega Point
Laboratories of Elmendorf, Texas and were commissioned by the Cellulose
Insulation Manufacturers Association (CIMA).
Improved Fire Safety
Particularly important, Cocoon cellulose insulation resists fire longer
than other types of insulation. In a recent test conducted at the
University of Maryland, when two structures were ignited, the one
insulated with Cocoon stood more than 55 percent longer than the other,
insulated with fiberglass. Cocoon has been treated with fire retardants
that actually exceed fire test requirements set by the Consumer Product
Safety Commission. It has a Class 1 fire rating and is nonflammable when
tested for smoldering combustion. The borates added to Cocoon to provide
flame resistance are six times less toxic to humans than common table
salt.
Reliability
You can count on Cocoon to maintain its benefits for the life of your
home. In older homes, Cocoon is often added to improve the performance
of other types of insulation. By upgrading to Cocoon from the start, you
won't have to address your insulation needs again.
Purchasing a home insulated with Cocoon is a wise decision. We encourage
you to consider two additional upgrades that may be offered by your
builder:
Quieter Home Insulation Upgrade
Home buyers who want maximum sound protection may choose to have Cocoon
installed in areas that are not usually insulated, such as walls
surrounding bedrooms and entertainment rooms. By choosing our Quieter
Home Insulation upgrade, you make the most of Cocoon’s inherent sound
control properties.
BioBase 501, Soy-Based Polyurethane
Foam
>Back
to Top
BioBase 501 is a revolutionary new insulation product.
It is a soy bean based spray-in-place polyurethane foam insulation that
creates an internal cavity, insulated, wind-proof barrier. The
advantages of foam insulation, such as BioBase 501 are highly recognized
by building professionals and the building science community. It is the
most environmentally friendly insulation in the industry, while
remaining very cost-effective.
Compared with the insulation system, what part of the building system
that remains unseen has such and influence on ventilation, heating,
cooling and total building performance, comfort and health?
Insulation in the past has been taken for granted.
The assumption has
always been that as long as there is some type of insulation in the
walls, everything is fine. However, this is just not true. All
insulation products are not created equal. There are many critical
performance facets to an insulations system in a truly healthy home, and
conventional insulations do not address all of these issues. R- Values
are only a small portion of what creates the superior performance in a
well insulated home. A seamless, insulated, wind-proof barrier in
addition to an affective R-Value will complete your insulation system.
Health, draft free comfort, and superior energy efficiency are easily
achieved with the BioBased 501 insulation system.
What is BioBase 501 and how does it work?
BioBase 501 spray-in-place insulation is an innovative, ultra-light
weight, two-part soybean oil-based polyurethane. It is an open-cell,
semi-rigid foam that in one step provides a sealed, thermal envelope
that simplifies constructions practices. This first-of-its-kind foam
insulation has been formulated with the environment in mind. It emits no VOCs or CFCs. It behaves much like a petroleum-based plastic foam,
without any of the environmental side effects. BioBase 501 contains no
formaldehyde. This product is the most environmentally friendly
insulation in the industry.
BioBase 501, a soybean based polyurethane, penetrates every cavity and
even the tiniest crevasses, expanding 100 times its original liquid size
for a perfect air-sealed fit. When expanded it creates millions of tiny
air pockets that result in an effective R-values. More importantly,
BioBased 501 creates an insulated, seamless, wind-proof barrier that
eliminates air infiltration, the number one cause of energy loss in a
home. In one step BioBase 501 provides a sealed, thermal envelope,
simplifying construction practices.

Energy efficiency the bottom line
Forming a true thermal seal BioBased 501 has the ability to reduce
utility bills up to 50 % or more. That means your potential savings
could be huge. Still some people my be tempted to use less expensive but
largely inferior “economy” insulations when building there new home.
That's a big mistake. Why? Because the cost of BioBase 501 only effects
your mortgage payments marginally, perhaps only a few dollars. But your
utility bills could drop significantly. That means you start saving
right away, keeping your money were it belongs in your pocket.
The Healthy Home
Consumers awareness is heightened by the concern of potential health
hazards associated with indoor air quality, using specific products and
building practices. BioBase 501 contributes to the overall health of the
occupants because there are no loose fibers or inherent dust used.
BioBased 501 foam insulation is a soft clean toxic free foam, much like
the pillow your sleep on every night This greatly increases indoor air
quality (IAQ) by reducing the amount of dust and particulate settling in
the home and infiltrating into the duct work of your HVAC system, which
reduces respiratory issues with building occupants – especially
children.
Another very important advantage is that BioBase 501 helps to eliminate
the external cavity condensation moisture problems in exterior walls.
Typically BioBased 501 eliminates the need for vapor barriers since it
eliminates external cavity air movement. Moisture and condensation have
become big issues for builders and home owners. Not only because they
affect building structure durability but they also are a major
contributor to the mold problems building owners are facing today. In
exterior wall floor and roof cavities mold can become a common problem.
Part of this is due to the fact that warm moist air comes in contact
with cooler air creating condensation in a wall cavity or space.
With BioBase 501 the seamless air tight thermal seal does not allow air
to penetrate past the surfaces on which it is applied. Harmful mold and
mildew are not given the same opportunities to grow. Mold not only
contributes to unhealthy indoor air quality but it also contributes to
rot. With Biobase 501 you can breathe easier knowing your number on
investment is protected.
Be more comfortable
The comfort of your home is one of the most important things that you
can achieve as a home owner, and home comfort can consist of several
things. In relation to building and the design of your home two things
come to mind immediately . Consistent even temperature control and quiet
environment. Biobase 501’s ability to fill areas around rough in piping
and nooks and cranny's that are can go untouched by conventional
insulation make it ideal for sound proofing capabilities. A lot of the
sounds and noises that we hear are airborne and make there way through
these untouched areas. The same holds true for drafts that go unblocked
to make their way through these hidden cracks and openings behind your
walls.
BioBase 501 spray in fills those holes and cracks and openings with one
easy step. Conforming to any space this insulated windproof barrier
creates that thermal seal that is needed to maintain consistent even
temperatures throughout a living space. Building envelope integrity
plays a crucial role in keeping out those uncomfortable drafts and hot
and cold rooms. Hard to insulate cathedral ceilings and bonus rooms in
upstairs attic spaces in easily accomplished with BioBase 501. When you
use BioBase 501 as an insulation system you eliminate the common
problems of traditional insulation resulting in a very comfortable home.
Conserving the Environment
Protecting our environment is an added benefit when considering BioBase
501. There are two ways in which BioBase 501 helps make this happen.
BioBase 501 is manufactured with Soybean oil extracted from Soybeans, an
annually renewable crop, grown right here in the U.S.A. by 600,000
American farmers. Another reason is the energy you save by building an
efficient home. This means less consumption of our precious resources
like oil and natural gas that we cannot replace. The bottom line is that
you will save hundreds of dollars a year and you will make an impact on
the country you live in and the planet you live on. Make the choice to
BioBase 501.
